#989 Fayetteville, NC

First visit to a brand new facility. The lunch price has gone up about 40 cents. Nothing new on the menu. Lots and lots of noisy people. The acoustics were poor, extremely loud environment. Wait staff rushed. Not sure about the layout. Long narrow pathways that are easily blocked by one person, or one person moving their chair into the pathway.

I’m not sure Golden Corral has come up with a winner in this update. I think I will be more likely to visit some of my other haunts one extra day a week instead of braving the crowded new GC.

You don’t realize how much value you place on a friendly wait staff until they aren’t there any more.

ADDENDUM [12/31/14]: I had not been back to GC since my first visit listed above.  I decided to return for lunch this afternoon around 1 pm.  Yeah, GC really screwed themselves over with these changes (with me).  The food is just as good as it was previously, but the environment has went “South”.

The place is “LOUD”.  Sound bounces around and makes people louder than they would have been in the old locations.  There were a bunch of people on one end of the facility, and damn, if I didn’t choose that end to sit in (opposite from my first visit).  I was in a section that could be closed off with doors (a meeting room, I would guess).  Almost all of the tables were taken.  One long corridor leading out had tables on each side, and as I’ve mentioned before from the other side, the walkway is too narrow.  It is uncomfortable for two people to pass each other, and one table even had a long legged man with his foot extended way out into the pathway.

But, here is an observation regarding two of the long-time GC staff.  Neither one looked up to acknowledge me.  They were always friendly in the old building, and had smiles.  I definitely didn’t see smiles on their faces.

I think GC, the management, may have created a facility that could process more customers, but it is definitely a place that I don’t want to return to.  It appears, crowded, loud and unfriendly.  *I was a regular customer previously, preferring the location on Ramsey Street, but had started to return to the Skibo location for lunch on a recurring basis.  The loss of me, as a customer, may not mean much to GC.  But, I would often visit twice a week for lunch.  I’ll miss Golden Corral, as it was, but the new mega-facility sucks and I plan to rarely return because the overall experience is just negative.  Like losing an old friend.

ADDENDUM-ADDENDUM [1/15/15]:  Golden Corral’s recent changes just keep giving to me.  I see that the old GC – Fayetteville location on Ramsey Street is slated to become another Hibachi Grill Supreme Buffet.  If that is the case, it will probably put “Little China” out of business.  The first Hibachi Grill Supreme Buffet across town put a favorite, small, Chinese restaurant out of business a few months after it came it.  I didn’t like HGSB and have only been about twice since they came to town.  I miss the Jalapeno Pork dish that was a favorite.

ADDENDUM-ADDENDUM-AD INFINITUM [03/07/16]:  I visited this Golden Corral location twice this week (either the 3rd & 4th, or 4th & 5th visits total) for lunch.  Today my being screams, “I HATE THIS PLACE!!!”  It is still LOUD, but may not be quite as loud as it first was.  I still hate that long straight stretch of serving buffet.  You are always having someone come at you, whether you turn to the right or to the left after serving yourself some item.  It doesn’t have a calming effect on me, and although I may not be able to find another restaurant that has as varied a fare, it is not worth it to me to keep giving this place the benefit of the doubt.  There is no doubt, this Golden Corral sucks!

Go, go, Golden Corral

I just found out yesterday that the Golden Corral that I normally visit will be closing after this coming Sunday. I don’t recall exactly, but I think it was built shortly after I came to Fayetteville, NC in 1995. I am not sure of that.
I have known DeWayne probably since my first visits.

ADDENDUM:  This Golden Corral became the Hibachi Grille, which I came to visit almost as much as I did the GC.  But, at the end of December 2016, I found that I had to change my eating habits and the HG could not satisfy my requirements to keep by BGL and weight down so I stopped going.  A few months ago, I saw the the Hibachi Grille had gone out of business and it wasn’t too long before Chaisson’s Grandson’s Restaurant went into the same location.  *I finally visited this incarnation and like the country cooking, but have to be selective to fill the BGL and weight requirements.  Still the price for the lunch buffet, with water, is about $7.84.

ADDENDUM [ 10/13/23 ]:  Elsewhere, I have followed the different businesses, mostly restaurants, that have done business at this location.  But, after about a year, the new 7-11 Convenience Store (and gas pumps) opened.  This is located just in front of the Lowes Home Store.  *And, they have consistently good, low gas prices and I have bought gas there probably 5 or 6 times already since they opened.

Making a Sandwich

Over the years I have refined a sandwich favorite of mine and here is how to make it.

I buy the Boars Head Black Pepper Ham and HT White American Cheese and buy a loaf of whole wheat bread.  The bread is not the organic version, so it has the grains in the bread.

I put the Indian Mint Chutney on one slice of the bread and the curry remoulade on the other slice.  I either sprinkle some ground Chipotle pepper on the ham, or on the curry remoulade (and then put the ham on top of it).  I then put a couple of slices of the white American cheese on the other slice.

Harris Teeter has good roasted red peppers, so I put a couple of those on top of the ham before closing the sandwich up.

*I make the curry remoulade out of Dukes mayonnaise, a little Patak’s Hot Curry Paste (HT), and some capers.

NOTE [ 11/21/23 ]: I haven’t made one of these in several years. At some point, I realized that I didn’t like the combination of flavors, although it is an interesting sandwich. I haven’t made the Curry Remoulade in a year or more, but I would probably still like it. My Curry Remoulade was the result of having a really good Shrimp Po Boy sandwich at the Water’s Edge Restaurant just across the river from Charleston, SC on Shem’s Creek. It was a sunny afternoon and I had the sandwich with fries. Fried shrimp, and the sauce on the sandwich was something like mayo, curry, and capers. Not sure there was anything else in the sauce. I found at home that this sauce went well on various deli meat sandwiches. It would go will with ham, turkey or chicken.

I liked the Mint Chutney which I think I got at the Indian (not American) store in Apex, NC. This store was still there when I went through Apex last time. As I recall, one time I found some item on the shelf for about 99 cents, and I took a couple of these jars to the register to purchase. After the man (owner) rang my tab up I realized that he had charged me full price for these 99 cents items, and I said something to him about that. He stopped, looked at the jars more closely and told me they were “out of date” and he couldn’t sell them to me, and he didn’t. What a scammer! I knew how dishonest he was from this little incident. I should have reported him to the Better Business Bureau. And, what a poor example for his daughter which I think at the time was maybe in her early teens, or slightly younger. I seem to recall her waiting on me at their cash register (computer) at least once.

Jay’s Seafood Restaurant – Albemarle, NC

I’ve been to Jay’s Seafood Restaurant at least twice, before my visit yesterday.

The first visit, the food was good, but I was seated in a large room with poor acoustics and the crowd was terribly LOUD!  The second visit, I was seated in a smaller room and the food was good.

I am guessing that I hadn’t been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on those first visits because there is little at this restaurant that a diabetic could eat and not put themselves in danger of a coma, and that’s not counting the number of items that are fried.

The slaw and beef chunks had good flavor.  I spooned some good looking corn kernels on my plate, but they had little flavor (little or no salt).  The fried shrimp were very small and I think the batter overpowered the flavor of the shrimp so that wasn’t that enjoyable.

The real disappointment was the clam chowder.  There were several whole clams in a thin, watery, milky broth, but there was little or no salt.  It smelled good, but was horribly bland to the palate.  But, there was nothing else in the soup.  No potatoes, no onions, etc.  I don’t think I’ve ever had clam chowder (New England Style) that didn’t have some potatoes.  And, I dipped the ladle a couple of times and only came up with the broth and a few whole clams.

A very disappointing visit, and probably my last.

[NOTE 06/29/24]:  Amazing the things I have forgotten, but in re-reading this posting, I have a visual of both visits, and even in looking down into the clam chowder pot which had been visited by many people before I got there to get the last “dregs”.  Not sure if it ever contained more than a couple of clams.

Seems like the smaller room I ate in, may have had Cyprus wood walls, and was darker, with less lighting.  The loud meal would be like what Golden Corral became after the old structure was torn down and the new one had horribly loud acoustics.  I haven’t been to Golden Corral for a long, long time, and I used to go at least once or twice a week.   *Still, since I’ve tried to get my weight and A1C in line, I haven’t been to Taco Bell in a long while either, and I went there once or twice a week regularly.

My Taco Bell drive-thru visits usually had me getting: a Burrito Supreme (beef), a Crunchy Taco, and a Bean Burrito. This meal I would take home and chop up some sweet onion, and maybe make some “homemade” salsa, and put the onion, sour cream and salsa in a salsa bowl (have yellow, green and black ones). Anchovies – Season Brand

I had a steak in the refrigerator last weekend, and also had some flat leaf parsley in a baggy.  I went to the food closet and got a box of  anchovies-season-brand-contentsSeason Brand anchovies.  season-anchovies I’m not sure where I purchased them, but they were very good when I opened the container.

I used several while frying the steak on the stove top, and also used some garlic flavored olive oil during the cooking process.  Anchovies disintegrate during the process.

I got out my blender and added the parsley, some of the garlic flavored olive oil, some anchovies, a little fresh onion, and garlic and some salt and pepper.  This blends up into a bright green pesto which is excellent with steak.  I think I got this recipe from one that Emeril Legasee had posted online several years ago.

The steak and the pesto were very good!

Birthday Celebration at LongHorn Steakhouse

I was born on Mary Ann’s 16th Birthday.  Mary Ann’s middle child, Ray, has a birthday on Jan. 7th.  We all got together on Sunday, January 19th, 2014 to celebrate our birthdays.

Mary Ann and I have been to the LongHorn Steakhouse in Jacksonville, NC once before.  I thought the meal pricey, but they do have to pay for the ambiance (which is pretty much like any other LongHorn Steakhouse).

Jim, agreed to pick up the tab if we all went about 3 pm, because he wanted to avoid the crowds of lunch or dinner.  Okay, I can live with that especially since I took a long nap and really didn’t get hungry before 3pm.  Now, sometimes, I do get hungry because their eating schedule is way off from mine.  If I have breakfast after 8:30 am, I feel it is more like brunch, or even lunch.  I also have lunch about 12:30 pm and after 1:30 pm would seem too late.  But, that is because I want to eat supper/dinner by about 6:30 pm.  If I eat later than that, I don’t give my metabolism enough time to digest the food before going to bed.  Now, I am not saying that I don’t ever eat dinner after 8 pm, but it would be rare, or a special occasion (usually dependent upon someone else’s time scheudle).

So, I drove, and Danny rode with me.  That way, after dinner, I could head on to Fayetteville without having to ride with someone back to Hubert to pick up my car.

The attendees were Jim and Mary Ann, Lawrence & Heather, Jamie and Danny, myself, Si, Ray, Jackson and Jacqueline.  I’m glad that we hit between the crowds, although I’m sure some of the other guests weren’t pleased with “loud” Jackson.  Fortunately with age, comes a loss of hearing, so except for a few toy projectiles thrown in my general direction, Jackson could cry out without disturbing me.  After all, it’s not the cousin that is responsible for maintaining a child’s decorum at the table.

Si started thumping my ear, which elicited a useless verbal warning on my part, that if he “hurt” me, I would indeed hurt him… and would try to make sure that my return hurt would try to encourage him never to hurt me again.  He eventually stopped.  Sometimes, he punches me in the stomach.

Lawrence and Heather arrived a little later than the rest of us, and Lawrence made some comment about why.  Something was said about Heather being mistaken for his wife or girlfriend (I think those were the two possibilities.), and I immediately quipped “or daughter.”  This elicited a few rolled eyes and laughs.  Heather is several years younger than Lawrence.  They seem to work well together and I like her.  She is quiet, but with a good sense of humor.

I ordered French Onion Soup, a steak & shrimp combo, with a baked sweet potato (cinnamon & sugar), and a salad with honey mustard dressing.  I also had unsweet tea (added sweetner) and some of their bread with butter for an appetizer.  It was all good, especially, the soup and the shrimp. Afterwards, I wasn’t filled, so I thought about having dessert also.  LongHorn gave all the birthday celebrants a free dessert.  I had the key lime pie, and Ray and Mary Ann had chocolate desserts.  Ray’s dessert was gigantic.  Two large scoops of vanilla ice cream in the middle, and on either site a 7 inch triangle of moussed chocolate in various shades of brown.

I cut a one inch wide slice of my key lime pie and then passed the rest around.  I think Jacqueline eventually ended up with it.

The French Onion Soup was so good.  It was a small bowl, but the cheese and broth and onions were very flavorful.  It was so good that when I got home that night, I bought some onions, and beef broth and made my own soup at home.  This was the first time that I used the Emile Henry Flame cookware, although I’ve probably had it for over a year and a half.  It is a red ceramic pot with a lid.  You can cook on the stove top, in the oven and even put in the freezer.  The soup turned out good although I used some shredded Mozzarella, and sandwich sliced white American cheese to top it.

At the end of the meal, I did say that this was probably the best Birthday that I had ever had.  Perhaps, I would qualify that by the best meal with friends and relatives I’ve had.  The food was good, and the people pleasantly interacting.

Addendum:

By the way, I celebrated my 60th Birthday on January 18, 2014.  Never thought I would make it this far.  Am reasonably healthy and mobile.  Have a comfortable apartment and the little white Honda Civic gets me around.

NOTE [02/19/25]: And now I can say, I’m 71 years old, and still in reasonably good health and mobile. I am still living in my comfortable apartment, which is up for lease renewal soon, and the white 2018 Toyota Camry gets me around. The Honda Civic died a miserable, but quick death in 2018, and after the engine was completely replaced, I decided to get a new car and give the Civic away. And the Civic is still being used successfully by one of Jeff’s kids. A “kid” who is getting married in a few months. [end NOTE]

What’s Missing at Jason’s deli?

More appropriately titled, “Why Don’t I Enjoy Jason’s deli Salad Bar”.

There is something about the ingredients on their salad bar that leaves me wondering, “Why does everything taste so bland.”  This isn’t the first or second time I have thought this, and I come away with questions as to why I just am not satisfied.  Maybe it is their salad dressings that leave me wanting.  But, I like the Ranch and the Thousand Island, and I’ve even used their Balsamic vinegar and olive oil, and I’m still not impressed.  Everything looks good.  Each item is cut with intent, and there is color where it should be and no wiltedness where it shouldn’t.

The items aren’t totally flavorless, but they seem to be mildly flavored.  Something at a level that is below what would jump out at you as, “that’s a good onion, or cucumber, or hard boiled egg, etc.”

The first couple of times that I visited Jason’s deli, in Fayetteville, I think I had a turkey wrap that had hummus and some roasted red peppers.  Honestly, it was not totally flavorless, but it didn’t say, “I’m something.”  In fact, the next several times, I actually brought a small Tupperware container with some roasted red peppers and some curry remoulade (mayo, curry paste, and capers), and I doctored the wrap up, and it was really good.  But then I asked myself, “Why am I having to bring this extra stuff.”  And then you have to come to the conclusion that the item they deliver isn’t that tasty.

I did enjoy the steamed baby veggies (carrots, broccoli) that I had with the wrap.

I am at Hwy 55 in Apex.

Sent from my Galaxy S®III

The Hwy. 55 is no longer at this location in Apex. I’ve noted that at least one other Hwy. 55 has closed in Kenansville, North Carolina.

I think it was a couple of months ago, I was passing through Kenansville one night, on my way back to Fayetteville from Hubert, and stopped in to get an order of Onion Rings and a Diet Dr. Pepper. Everything was the same, except for two things I did notice. They had a new menu, on a single two-sided laminated sheet of paper, and their outdoor sign was either not lit, or missing.

Everything was the same! So, I really didn’t pay attention to the phrase on the menu that said, “Friends You Know.” It was only later that I realized that “Friends You Know” wasn’t an advertising slogan for Hwy. 55, but the new name of this restaurant, “FYK.” The woman manager, perhaps owner, brought this to my attention that they had bought out Hwy. 55 at this location but were still serving most of the former items, and they still had onion rings and Diet Dr. Pepper, and all the 50’s glitz was still on the walls, the black & white checkered floor tiles and a full sized Elvis up near the front door.

The onion rings and the Diet Dr. Pepper were both just like they had been before, deliciously pleasing, with a lot of ketchup. And at least once since then I’ve tried to stop by again to have some more onion rings. One time they were closed for a holiday, and another time they were also closed, maybe closed on Mondays? So, I still want to enjoy another order of onion rings.

[NOTE]: On a later visit, I talked with a young (19) man who was a cook. He told me that the woman wasn’t the owner, or maybe even a manager. [end NOTE]

Thai Dye Tortilla Pizza at Home

Thai Dye Pizza from Mellow Mushroom
Thai Dye Pizza from Mellow Mushroom

Last night, I tried to recreate the flavors of the Thai Dye pizza in my flour tortilla @home pizza.  It was surprisingly close.

I didn’t want to have to cook a chicken breast to get the white chicken so I bought a can of “white chicken” chunks for $1.29 from Food Lion.  I put a little olive oil in a pan and added a few cloves of garlic (whole), some chopped onion, a small chopped tomato and added some basil.  I didn’t have Thai Basil (which is more pungent), but have had an adequate supply of Italian Basil that I have been growing on my patio this summer.  I added the chunks of white chicken and then sifted some McCormick’s Curry Powder over the entire lot.  I think I added a little salt and pepper here also.

While the ingredients were cooking on the stove top, I put one of my spinach, flour tortillas in a glass pie pan, spread some olive oil across the surface and added some powdered garlic.  When the chicken was done, I spread it over the tortilla shell.  I added several slices of cucumber about the ingredients.  I had some sweet Thai Chili sauce which I drizzled over the pizza ingredients.  I then spread grated mozzarella cheese across everything.

That’s it.  I had my oven heating on Broil at HI.  I slipped the pan into the oven on the top rack (maybe 4 or 5 inches from the top).  You can’t go away too long on this.  The pizza is usually done in a couple of minutes.  I think 4 minutes would make the top mostly black, but 2.5 to 3 minutes gets the edges browned and some of the cheese browned dotted about the pizza.

I then remove the pan from the oven, and use a pot holder to hold the hot pie pan on one edge tilting it over toward a waiting dinner plate.  I use a fork if I have to, and once the tortilla shell releases from the pie pan, the whole thing slips easily onto the plate.

The flavors were close enough to be quite pleasing, but I still like the “store bought” version because of the pizza dough’s flavor and saltiness.  I plan to make this again, and might even try using real pizza dough because I think the resulting product will satisfy my Thai Dye pizza craving.
